CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE INDIVIDUAL THERAPY IN ONTARIO

CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Therapy that makes room for the full context of your experience.

Our experiences are shaped by more than what happens within us—the people around us, the families we grow up in, the cultures we’re part of, and the identities we carry all become part of how we experience ourselves and our lives.

With both personal and clinical understanding, I make room for this context throughout our work, whether or not culture is what brings you to therapy. This means less need to explain or justify why that context matters, and more space to understand your experiences, your needs, and what matters to you

Maybe You’ve Been Feeling…

Pulled between what you want for yourself and what your family, culture, or community expects of you.

Caught between love, loyalty, guilt, and resentment in your family relationships, especially when expectations or responsibilities feel difficult to navigate.

Torn between the person you want to be and how you were raised, and questioning whether your needs or choices make you selfish, wrong, or not enough.

Like you’re always the one accommodating, adapting, and keeping the peace, while rarely feeling fully seen or understood yourself.

Uncertain about what you want to carry forward, let go of, or do differently as your life, relationships, and roles change.

HOW I WORK

A Culturally Responsive Approach to Therapy

01 — CONTEXT

Understanding The Bigger Picture

We can consider the family, cultural, relational, and social contexts that shape your experiences and what’s feeling difficult, while staying curious about what’s relevant to you.

02 — EXPLORATION

Examining What You’ve Learned

We can explore the beliefs, expectations, and roles you’ve learned over time, and consider what feels meaningful, what feels difficult, and what you may want to understand differently.

03 — CHANGE

Making Room For Something Different

We can work with the patterns and relationships you want to strengthen or change, while staying grounded in what matters to you and the realities of your life.

Why this Work Matters to Me

As a second-generation Vietnamese-Chinese Canadian, I know firsthand how deeply culture, family, identity, and expectations can shape our experiences. I also know what it feels like to have those experiences misunderstood or dismissed, and how exhausting it can be to explain or justify why they matter. These experiences have shaped my path to becoming a therapist and continue to inform how I approach this work.

I won’t assume that sharing some of your background means I know exactly what your experience is like. What I do know is how important it can be to have this context taken seriously, because when these parts are left out, we can often miss the bigger picture.
