COUPLES THERAPY — FOCUSED SERVICES
Culturally Responsive Couples Therapy in Ontario
CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE COUPLES THERAPY
Couples Therapy That Understands Your Relationship in Context.
We bring so much of where we come from into our relationships: our values, expectations, family dynamics, and what we learned about connection, conflict, and relationships.
With both personal and clinical understanding, I make room for this context throughout our work whether or not culture is what brings you to therapy. This means less need to explain or justify where you’re coming from, and more focus on understanding your relationship as a whole.

Maybe This Feels Familiar…
Struggling with conflict, disconnection, trust, or a major change, and wanting these challenges understood within the context of your lives and experiences.
Having different ways of communicating, handling conflict, expressing emotions, or showing care.
Balancing your relationship with family expectations, responsibilities, or opinions about how your life together should look.
Navigating differences in culture, values, religion, or upbringing that affect what each of you expects from the relationship.
Noticing family or cultural patterns showing up in your relationship, even when you hoped things would be different.
MY APPROACH
Grounded in Decades of Research and Responsive to Who You Are
01 — RESEARCH BACKED
Getting to The Root of What Keeps You Stuck
My work is grounded in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), one of the most established and extensively researched approaches to couples therapy. EFCT helps us understand not only the problems you’re facing, but the deeper patterns, emotions, and experiences underneath them. This allows us to work more directly with what keeps pulling you back into the same difficult places, rather than focusing only on managing the problem.
02 — INHERITED PATTERNS
Understanding How Your Histories Meet in The Present
Drawing from Family Systems Theory, we can explore how each person’s family relationships and experiences may have shaped what you learned about closeness, conflict, roles, responsibility, and what to expect from others. Understanding these influences gives us a fuller picture of how your relationship has developed, why certain dynamics emerge, and what may be keeping you stuck.
03 — CULTURE & CONTEXT
Making Room For The Realities Shaping Your Relationship
Your relationship exists within a much bigger world. Culture, identity, community, and lived experience can shape the pressures you face, where you feel understood or misunderstood, the expectations placed on you, and the sources of strength and connection you draw from. I make room for these parts of your lives so we can understand what’s happening within your relationship without losing sight of what’s happening around it.
